On March 14, the University of Arizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy is hosting PharmTalk, an evening of brief lectures highlighting the clinicians and researchers working to create a healthier future. The free, in-person event will highlight the breadth and depth of the pharmacy profession and the impact of the UArizona Coit College of Pharmacy.

“This is a unique opportunity to discover how pharmacy is more than what you see at your retail drug store. Our college is educating the next generation of clinical care experts, and our nationally renowned researchers are discovering drugs aimed at improving our quality of life as we age,” said Rick Schnellmann, PhD, dean of the Coit College of Pharmacy. “Everyone is invited to attend. If you are curious about pharmacists’ role in your community or the innovative research taking place within our college, come to PharmTalk and engage with us.”

PharmTalk featured speakers and topics include:

Perspectives on Modern Pharmacy Practice
Pharmacists today work side by side with doctors, nurses and other health care team members. In this session, we discuss the past, present and future of modern pharmacy. Bernadette Cornelison, PharmD, MS, BCPS, assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice and science, and Christopher Edwards, PharmD, BCPS, assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice and science, will explore innovative ways pharmacists around the country are using their knowledge and skills as “the medication experts” to help take better care of our patients and communities.

Meeting a Critical Challenge: Aging and Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disorders
Average life expectancy has doubled since the early 1900s. It is anticipated that more than 90 million Americans will be over 65 years of age by 2050. This extraordinary achievement toward greater longevity has been accompanied by dramatic increases in age-related neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Hear from the Coit Center for Longevity and Neurotherapeutics co-directors Bernardo Lemos, PhD, R. Ken and Donna Coit Endowed Chair in Aging and Neurodegenerative Diseases, and Haining Zhu, PhD, R. Ken and Donna Coit Endowed Chair in Aging and Neurodegenerative Diseases, about their research on promoting longevity and decreasing neurocognitive decline.

Cannabis in the Community: A Poison Center’s Response
It has been a few years since marijuana was legalized in Arizona. Steven Dudley, PharmD, DABAT, director of the Arizona Center for Drug and Poison Control, discusses what has changed since its legalization, what dangers may exist, and what you need to know about marijuana in all of its forms to keep you and your loved ones safe.

PharmTalk begins with a reception at 4:30 p.m., and the first talk starts at 5 p.m. Registration is requested.
