Boston Children’s Hospital announced Wednesday a record gift of $100 million that it says will “transform the future of pediatric behavioral health care.”

The gift, from Quincy billionaires and philanthropists Karen and Rob Hale, is the largest in the hospital’s history.

“This is the most significant gift we have ever given,” Rob Hale said.

“This gift is nothing short of transformational,” Dr. Kevin B. Churchwell, CEO of Boston Children’s Hospital, said in a statement. “It reflects extraordinary compassion and a shared belief that every child deserves not only physical health but also mental wellness.”

The existing Hale Family Center has been invaluable, offering amenities such as a shower for parents who find themselves staying overnight due to a mental health crisis in the family. A new state-of-the-art facility on the Brighton campus of Franciscan Children’s, which became part of the Boston Children’s health system in 2023, will be named the Hale Family Building. It will include 24 slots for a partial hospital program and an intensive outpatient program, a 14-bed community-based acute treatment program, a dental suite, four operating rooms and a pharmacy.

The Hales, known for their philanthropy, previously gave every Quincy College graduate a $1,000 commencement gift during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rob Hale said the pandemic turned the mental health crisis into an epidemic, further emphasizing the urgent need for improved mental health care facilities.

Boston Children’s, a comprehensive center for pediatric and adolescent health care, is ranked one of the top pediatric hospitals in the nation. It was founded in 1869 and has nine satellite locations.

The new center is expected to open in 2029.
